'Upcycling'

I found this interesting and relevant to our project, so looked further into what it meant...

Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value.

Upcycling is the opposite of downcycling, which is the other half of the recycling process. Downcycling involves converting materials and products into new materials of lesser quality. Most recycling involves converting or extracting useful materials from a product and creating a different product or material.

For example, during the recycling process of plastics other than those used to create bottles, many different types of plastics are mixed, resulting in a hybrid. This hybrid is used in the manufacturing of plastic lumber applications. However, unlike the engineered polymer ABS which hold properties of several plastics well, recycled plastics suffer phase-separation that causes structural weakness in the final product.

In developing countries, where new raw materials are often expensive, upcycling is commonly practiced, largely due to impoverished conditions.
Upcycling has seen an increase in use due to its current marketability and the lowered cost of reused materials.[3] Inhabitat, a blog devoted to sustainability and design, holds an annual upcycling design competition with entries coming from around the globe.

Upcycling Website

Why Upcycle?

upcycling is becoming increasingly popular among groups and individuals concerned about climate change.  Recycling is great but it requires energy and resources to collect, sort and process unwanted items and waste.
Upcycling is an even greener way of recycling – you find a new purpose for your unwanted items before you chuck them away.

OUGD406 // Communication Is A Virus // Recycling Big Cartel

I have been looking at some other Big Cartel Recycling shops online just to get a feel to see what else is currently on the market in that field...

Uncommonly Beautiful Recycled Accessories.

mainly sell recycled accesories. Earings, Necklaces etc. Their design looks like it needs a bit of a re-vamp, looks to be cliche vintage look that was popular a couple of years ago. Seems to be all made by one person though, so has the personal feel. I think our design needs to look a little bit more professional while still maintaining the 'Handmade' approach to get more customers.

Make
(Recycled Craft Workshop)

More contemporary design, they look to be a little bit more professional than the last, but still have this handmade approach to their brand. The big button logo and curved san serif font matched with the pink background appeals mainly to girls i think, and looks like a friendly and approachable brand to buy from.

OUGD406 // Communication Is A Virus // Eco-Friendly Logo

We want to mix the eco-friendly style into a sleek, clean cut look for our logo, so i thougth i would research a bit of both for inspiration...

OUGD406 // Communication is a virus // Ecoist Website Layout

As we are planning on creating a website for this brief, i looked into the 'Ecoist' website...

"Ecoist handmade handbags are made from recycled candy wrappers, food packages, soda labels, and other recycled materials. We collect waste and "upcycle" it into eco friendly bags, recycled purses, and one-of-kind, limited collection handbags."

The logo is really nice. It combines the slick font with the patchwork colours which relate to the product. This is something we will need to think about when branding our product. We need to try and bring an element of the product into the logo while still keeping it pretty clean cut and contemporary.

I also like the little droplets creating the shape at the end. I'm not sure how this relates to the product but it brings more of a sense of eco-friendly to the logo.

As for the website itself it is pretty clean cut and simple, definitely something we will be taking into consideration when designing. Maybe more contemporary.
