Design for Packaging - Research

What is Packaging?

Packaging is the science, art, and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use. Packaging also refers to the process of design, evaluation, and production of packages. Packaging can be described as a coordinated systemof preparing goods for transport, warehousing, logistics, sale, and end use. Packaging contains, protects, preserves, transports, informs, and sells. In many countries it is fully integrated into government, business, institutional, industrial, and personal use.
Package labeling  or labelling is any written, electronic, or graphic communications on the packaging or on a separate but associated label.

Some of the most innovative and exciting packaging found online :-

'Doggy Bag'

Interesting packaging for pencils
 by Kevin Angeloni

“Another way of seeing the gray pencil that everyone knows and is an indispensable tool for all creatives. The pencil is contained in a thin glass cylinder topped with a cork. Everything is placed in a plexiglass holder.”

'Tea Hangers'
by Soon Mo Kang

It's an interesting take on the simple motion of hanging a tea bag on the rim of your cup. Colour-Coded for different varieties of tea. Great packaging with the Clothing Rail inside of the box and the hangers and t-shirt shaped tea bags are quirky!

'Fruit Juice Carton Packaging'

Japaense Industrial designer has created a carton that is super realistic to look and feel like the fruit that they contain.

'Anti-Theft Lunch Bags'

'Stay Fresh Meat Labels'

Concept by To Kenkyo

The food label changed colour after reacting the ammonia given off by meat when the food is getting spoilt. Really nice concept making it innovative and practical.

 'North American Teapee packaging'

By Sophie Pepin

Not only a striking an eye-catching piece of design but also a clever play on words with the 'teepee' being changed into 'teapee'.

Native American’s used to brew a cup of tea way before the first French and British settlers reached the shores of North America. Canadian student Sophie Pépin went back to the roots of the native american nomadic lifestyle and created a tea packaging that not only is directly inspired by teepees but also celebrates the skills of their legendary medical knowledge.

Alcoholic Drink Packaging

Something that I have been interested in for quite some time is alcoholic beverage packaging. There is something about Spirit and beer bottles that have been crafted and designed beautifully that make them more appealing. Here is a few of my favourites that I have collected through Pinterest and Tumblr over the last year or so...

Launched in late 2004 to celebrate the New Year, Evian's 1-L Origine glass bottle is a monolithic ice-like sculpture. The triangular bottle is a reminiscent of the alpine mountaintops from which Evian water has flowed for more than 8,000 years. The design was handled by Landor Paris

'Loveland Aleworks'

Packaging and branding by Manuel. A Visual Communication Studio based in California.
Nice simple Type and Line Work to create the branding and packaging for a brewing company in Colorado.

'Minimalist Packaging'

Design collective Antrepo decided to do an experiment to make high brands into minimalist designs. The dimages show the designs going from the original packaging to the basic core elements.

'Austin Gold Top Cider'

Designer Simon Walker used hand drawn typography and illustrations to create the branding and packaging of Austin based Cider producers 'Gold Top'.

Agua De Cortes - Mineral Water.

Caravan

LH20 Designed by Pedrita.

LH2O is a research project on a new form for Água de Luso (Luso water) and the result of a collaboration between Pedrita studio and the Luso brand. This project aims to find not only a new form for this liquid, but also to come up with a bottle that illustrates the qualities and unique properties of Água de Luso, which has been part of the life and body of the Portuguese for over 150 years. That’s what made us – naturally – add a new element to the chemical formula of water, redesigning the way we see, read and know Água de Luso.
